Critical reception
Kine Each week said “The new sturdy ‘crooks slide out’ are peopled that have a colourful diversity regarding essential and you may arresting characters, that, skilfully controlled of the writer and you may movie director, enable the movie so you’re able to tread drinking water effectively. It is just on the wind up it begins to fall apart, nevertheless smack-up finale rescues they in the ‘red’. Admirably staged and you will intelligently dialogued, it’ll have zero great challenge in traditions off the incredibly unappealing label.” [ 8 ]
Month-to-month Movie Bulletin told you “The movie moves within an easy rate, the latest talk was smooth and you may characterisations fundamentally active. Penis Powell and Evelyn Keyes head new shed expertly, since investigator is played with considerable aplomb from the that individual personality, Lee J. Cobb.” [ 9 ]
Richard Brody regarding the The newest Yorker noted “This terse and you may tight motion picture noir are considering brand new close and professional issues of your own term reputation, the fresh unlawful genius (played because of the Cock Powell) behind a sophisticated illegal gambling establishment. Brand new film’s writer and you can manager, Robert Rossen, sets up an effective multidimensional chess online game, to possess mortal limits, ranging from Johnny, their workplace (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s partner (Ellen Drew), a beneficial cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you can good scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whose sibling (Nina Foch) worked from the casino and old an effective corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). Brand new caustically epigrammatic program, the new cast’s suavely controlled body gestures off love and you will danger, and Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you may stylishly assertive photographs (in addition to their political conscience) get this to pugnacious but really in depth spectacle a hidden antique of one’s category.” [ ten ]

Image keeps activity and you will suspense, and you may specific short suits from laughs to include flavor. Expert activities of the Dick Powell, given that a betting house overseer, and you will Lee J. Cobb, because the a police inspector, and additionally up the score . While the patch employs a familiar pattern, this new characterizations try new and shows suitable so you can overbalance. Dialogue are terse and you may relevant, steering clear of the emotional, phoney contact. Uncommon camera basics show up occasionally to intensify interest and you may briefly stop the eye. Good teamplay by the Robert Rossen, increasing due to the fact movie director-scripter, and you will Milton Holmes, completely new journalist and you will user music producer, and additionally helps with making this a smooth manufacturing.” [ 11 ]

Its generally a question of watching Mr. Powell read their paces smartly when you’re an enormous throw off actors and you may stars render your typical help. Evelyn Keyes takes on the nice absolutely nothing lady who brings forth the latest best in him and Ellen Received is the easy and you will slinky vixen who gets your for the jams. Thomas Gomez is actually fatty because the villain and Lee J. Cobb do a new ready tour as a tired police inspector which in the end shuts the way it is. A great deal of drinking and you can smoking is carried out by most of the alarmed.” [ 12 ]
